What is....Good print

TASK

Find at least 5 diverse examples of the effective/creative use of print in the following areas of design:
  • Branding and Identity
  • Packaging and Promotion
  • Publishing & Editorial
  • Information & Wayfinding
You should aim to identify design work from a range of commercial/cultural references, target audiences and creative contexts.

You will need to identify primary and secondary sources and not rely solely on web-based examples as this will encourage you to be more adventurous in your research and diverse in your findings. You will also gain a more informed understanding of the 'real world' context of the work.

Response to brief:

Branding and Identity
http://www.wolffolins.com/macmillan.php

A target audience of those who suffer, or know someone who suffers from cancer. It advertises the support group for those who want help, and those who want to support it.

This advert gives a honest view of the effects of cancer. Explaining why those who have it, need support, thus a reason to help fund the project.

I like the simplicity of the designs macmillan do. Simplistic typography, a very strict colour palette and a lot of negative space.

The use of repetition really highlights the long list of thing macmillan do. The 'listing structure' having a real impact on a readers eye, to understand it all, you have to read it, line by line.

British rail design

An iconic design we see everywhere, simple in its form, needs to words to describe what it is. Like most road signs, it uses simple shape to communicate an idea, word or message.

Logo / branding design

I really love the illustrative quality these images hold.
I've always been a fan of a monochrome colour palette so these are right up my street really.
There just a couple of test pieces for a possible logo for a brand.

Specsavers branding campaign

A series of environmental graphics, to add some humour to the reason you would need new glasses. Using their branding colour, and slogan, you can tell from a distance the company it is advertising. The logo need not be the main focus of the design.

Stationary branding, using simple folding techniques to create a layered piece, with several items of information. I like the simple colour palette used, the dash of fluorescent pink adding an element of interest.

PACKAGING AND PROMOTION

Cheese labels - I really like the simplicity and range of typography used within these designs. They compliment one another. By making it appear old, the designs look modern. The stamp sign signifying old methods that used to be used to seal the cheese.
The design are consistent to create a range.

Coffee Company - plunger

I really like the small illustrations and colour palette used within these packaging designs. There very quirky and modern.

'Family ties'

I like these little clever designs, the product name matching quite nicely with the product. Always a fan of a monochromic colour palette. The  product design suits the formality of the item of clothing it packages, in typography and shape format.

Simple, formal typographic design. Using a range of medias including newspaper and print. Made to look sophisticated with colour palette choice and use of a ribboned tag.

Humorous crisp packet designs, resembling caricatures of historic people. Very simple illustrative black and white designs on a plain white packet keeps it simple but effective.

PUBLISHING AND EDITORIAL

I absolutely love these book sleeve designs, its the whole 'vintage' look I like, with the style of serif font used. Even the though the covers are different in style, colour and content they work well together due to the way each of them relate to the arts and crafts movement, looking quite like work by William Morris.

These are just amazing book cover designs. There so busy, vibrant and have so much typography, shapes and illustrations going on.

I thinnk this whole book it stnning. The overall design has a big impact due to its arrangement and use of cut outs, and layers. Its beautiful because of its simplicity.

Magazine cover - Esquire
Simple and iconic use of Andy Warhols well used 'campbells soup' immediately targets an audience of artists and designers.

INFORMATION AND WAYFINDING

A very simple and useful information chart to show the Mississippi river system. I like the arrangement of  colours and link to the London underground system map.

Here I like the Colours, layout, not in particular the content. I like the use of gradients and the 'tea stained' look it has.

The Combination of medias, using objects to recreate bar charts is a really clever concept.

A really clever visual aid, and rather shocking one, makes you realise animals live a lot longer than what you think! It's easy to read, and understand with little writing.

Simple wayfinding, printed onto a large wall board. Female colours showing target audience.

Good is...? Weehouse

Whilst searching the internet I came across a really interesting website, a company, cased in America, its the collaboration between a designer and architect. The company provides a site in which you can design, and order a flat packed house. The 'weehouses' are made of eco friendly materials, and they really enforce this idea, using solar panels and a recycling process. The design process also utilises strategies to reduce waste.

As seen below the 'Weehouses' are befitting to the environment, are made mostly of wooden materials, with some modern and architecturally stunning interiors. The whole idea is that you can contact the designers, and for your new home to be delivered on the back of a lorry.

One of the smaller, more abstract and personalised designs.

Simply dropping your new home off.

One of the best things about the weehouses is its ability to transport it

Although simply a wooden cabin, some of the 'weehouses' have beautiful interiors

Their simple structure means, as long as you have land ownership, they can be placed pretty much anywhere.

Publicity

Wee houses are gaining popularity within the industry, being shown with Grand designs and other such mainstream design company publications.

After looking at this company, I've realised there only available online, they do not provide paper based product information. Which is a niche I could possibly take on board, and produce the print based materials for the company myself. Possibly create the branding, packaging and advertising of the products being sold so it's more widely available. I did find when looking on the website, it quite tedious going through a load of links to find out vital pieces of information a potential buyer would need. Having it printed into a simple booklet / catalogue would be a much easier way to go about it, I feel. All the information to hand, and available at all times.
