DESIGN IS ABOUT DOING - inspiration and idea's

Typography based posters

The range of posters here have really taken my fancy due to there column like layout, and collage of fonts, type size, weight and styles. The colour palettes in each work very well together too. Reminding me of old shop signs seen a few decades ago.

Dont restrict yourself to medium
Love the idea of using an inanimate object to use for the subject of your design

I like the idea of mixing up the direction of text making it slightly more challenging to read.

Combination of mediums - Type on photo

Earthy natural materials to create a letterform
When referencing an opposite in regard to something being artificial VS natural

Combining image and type to create image

Using the style of type to pass off the subject
For instance, hand drawn typed

Using mediums to prove opposites
Using stitching to back up an idea or opposite, Hand crafted digital.

Using layering
I like the idea of several layers to a design, for instance up and down, above below, inside outside, underneath on top.

 Cutting Taxes
Something with a comical / serious element? Using crafted visually to get a message across instead of type.

Organised chaos
I like the idea of producing something in relation to a contradictory opposite using relevant object, or crafted objects to create the phrase.

Being visible

DESIGN IS ABOUT DOING - Defining

Opposite:

In lexical semantics, opposites are words that lie in an inherently incompatible binary relationship as in the opposite pairs male : femalelong : shortup : down, and precede : follow. The notion of incompatibility here refers to the fact that one word in an opposite pair entails that it is not the other pair member. For example, something that is long entails that it is not short. It is referred to as a 'binary' relationship because there are two members in a set of opposites. The relationship between opposites is known as opposition. A member of a pair of opposites can generally be determined by the question What is the opposite of  X ?

being directly across from each other; facing; "And I on the opposite shore will be, ready to ride and spread the alarm"- Longfellow; "we lived on opposite sides of the street"; "at opposite poles"

antonym: a word that expresses a meaning opposed to the meaning of another word, in which case the two words are antonyms of each other; "to him the antonym of `gay' was `depressed'"

moving or facing away from each other; "looking in opposite directions"; "they went in opposite directions

opposition: a contestant that you are matched against

Binary Opposition:

In critical theory, a binary opposition (also binary system) is a pair of terms or concepts that are theoretical opposites. In structuralism, a binary opposition is seen as a fundamental organizer of human philosophy, culture, and language. In the community of philosophers and scholars, most believe that "unless a distinction can be made rigorous and precise it isn't really a distinction."

DESIGN FOR SCREEN - WEBSITES

From these Its pretty obvious of my particular style liking.

Image montage, plus negative space = a compact, interesting, engaging range of links images and pages.

Illustrational to the mass! A complimenting limited colour palette.

Vintage-esqu is a real thing a love, the next few websites do this. Using grey or sepia toned images, along with various tea-stained or aged elements. Really it's all about aesthetics for me.

I really, really, really love this. It seems to portray the well to do element of britain, using particular images montaged together. The links I feel don't work with the design, there not very in keeping.

Because of all it had to say...

teat stained!

Handrawn elements, hand crafted, and photography. Brilliance.

The white illustrations used on a black background is not something use widely but I really like the effect it creates.

DESIGN FOR SCRREN - MUSIC VIDEOS

Fat City Reprise - Long Gone from Cesar Kuriyama on Vimeo.

A very simple photo based stop motion, using a character which couldn't be otherwise used in this context without the use of stop motion.

Using a series of cutouts of photographs. A clever and visually engaging black and white stop motion music video.

Always a favourite of mine. A lovely piece.

A well renown artist using the method. Not too keen on what gizmo is supposed to portray. Not exactly 'gremlin-eque' but its quite comical with the reference to it.

I really like the combination of hand crafted elements with photography used here.

DESIGN FOR SCREEN - STOP MOTION

I really like hand drawn stop motions as creativity isn't restricted and imagination can really be explored. I like the way in which things arn't what they seem in this and they forever change and manipulate, its an ongoing manipulation of the drawings.

Music video

A clever a new outlook on the game of tetris.
Human tetris

This I find really quite funny. The use of the art board being a t-shirt and actors interacting with it is brilliant. Using a range of medium, print, material objects and actors really work well together in this context.

PACKAGING AND ADVERTISING DESIGNS

A interactive method of packaging is a really quirky way of gaining attention to the product at hand.

Another interactive  campaign, using the environment to make the print a moving image is a fun and engaging method.

A really nice 'coincidence' as such.

This piece of advertising I really like, if I had more time I would love to design something similar to a food related product for my current project.

A relating food advertisement to my collection 100 book. A nice way of presenting the product and its attributes. Using visual explanation of product content.

DESIGN FOR SCRREN - ADVERTISING

Something we can all relate to (city scene) it creates a child like imaginative picture.

Just goes to show, there's many forms of 'artboards'

Love this!

I can't explain why I love this so much. Whether its the extravagance of the commercial for beer, or the newt making a slight 'oof' sound at the end...

DESIGN FOR SCREEN - INTERACTIVE

Interactive boards

Weight watchers, bus stop weighing. Nice idea, a bit awkward if unknowingly sat upon this seat, but it's interactive and makes people aware of their weight - possibly making them insecure enough to join?

Makes vending machines that much more exiting

A loevly, passing by method of advertising

Time is key here. Most effective at night i'm sure. something to think about...

Using nature as a helping hand. Beautiful. It may not be directly as screen, but i like it anyway.

DESIGN FOR SCREEN

I  like the combination of hand drawn and computerised elements, they really go hand in hand. The consistent colour palette I feel helps it to achieve this. I really like the layout too. It's grid like system keeps it simple and easy to use.

PACKAGING INSPIRATION

A very simple way to hold several flat items

A decorative style, with the ability to see the inside product.

A decorative book sleeve. Perhaps use a sleeve to hold entirety of products?

POSTCARD INSPIRATION

Amy Rodchester

These were some designs for Newcastle festival of dance, I really like the composition and repeated element here. A potential idea for my own product?

A possibility? Playing card like format? With relating quotes?
