Image - Binding

The Concertina bind I feel is going to be most suitable for my book, due to the mass amount of content. Also the possibility for my book to become a wall length post to put up on a children's wall. My binding skills and knowledge aren't brilliant so this suits me best. Its quick enough to make, something I have to consider due to the amount I have to make against a tight deadline.

Another hand made alphabet book, pretty to make but not practical. This is something I could consider creating in a future project. The concertina fold in defiantly something I'm going to try with my own book.

I'm sure the direction i'm going to take with this book is primarily illustration, outline based. The colour palette I'm unsure of, the below book holds illustrations with the amount of detail and intricacy I want to achieve. The monochromatic colour palette too is something I like, and feel it compliments the style of illustration within it.

Mixed media is something I'm really interested in, collage particually. I found a beautiful example of a book showcasing mixed media and collage through displaying the alphabet. This is an approach I could take as I have 2 weeks to produce it, but whether it would be most effective in this media, i'm not sure. Its something to investigate and explore further.

Thinking of ways to bind the book, I looked at a range of ways which would suit the huge content of my book.

The consatina book would display my alphabet book as a whole, which is probably the best way a child could learn, seeing each letter one after the other. Its also the quickest and least time consuming method, but possibly one of the more expensive ways to do it.

The below bind is amazing, it would make my own book look extremely beautiful but the amount of time and effort it would take to do this, 5 times over I feel would be too much of a challenge.

I really like this quirky alphabet screen print, the mixed array of typefaces in a lovely combination, and something I could consider when creating my own book.

Below is a hot dog fold book, a cheap way of producing my book so its definitely an idea.

Something else I considered was telling a story through my book..

This book is brilliant, its use of colour, image and typeface has created wonderful children alphabet book. His images are all hand rendered or painted, creating a beautiful mixed media piece. Unfortunately I can't create something similar due to the limited colour palette...but its a nice idea.

A range of approaches I could take in regard to manipulating an existing typeface, into an image it could represent.

Photography could be an approach, but I don't think my skills lie within this.

The below image is simply amazing, but I have tried silver on black card before and its very difficult to find a pen which is thin enough to provide detail, but to also be a block colour and to hold no transparency.

I do like collage and have worked with it many times before, but I think it would be very hard in trying to achieve my concept with this. I would have to use materials beginning with the letter i'm constructing. This would be very time consuming - possibly something to think about for a future project.
